On 26, 27 and 29 January, members of the Privacy Engineering Research Group at the School of Computer Engineering of the University of Valladolid gave several workshops on digital privacy to 114 third-year secondary school students at IES Vega del Prado.
The aim of the activity was to raise awareness of important issues such as digital privacy and personal data protection. Students were also taught what information the mobile applications they use collect and how to manage the permissions they request.
During the sessions, students learned in a practical way how to grant and deny permissions in mobile apps and tested the APK Falcon tool, where they were able to analyse the privacy risk of mobile applications. Through examples, attendees checked what data the applications collect and why it is important to review the permissions they request before installing them.
In addition, they learned about metadata accompanying images and multimedia files and what kind of information it can reveal without the user being aware, such as location, date, or device used. Through practical examples, they understood how this invisible data is also part of their digital privacy and why it is important to know how to manage it. The activity combined explanations with practical exercises and recommendations on digital privacy and responsible use of technology.
The IngPriv Group would like to thank IES Vega del Prado for its collaboration and participation in the workshops.
