Digital privacy workshops for vocational training at IES Julián Marías

Members of the Privacy Engineering Research Group (IngPriv) at theSchool of Computer Engineering of the University of Valladolid gave several workshops on digital privacy on 12, 26 and 28November, aimed at a total of 150 vocational training students at the IES Julián Marías secondary school in Valladolid.

Among those attending the sessions were students from the Health Emergencies training programme, the Oral Hygiene training programme, the Electricity and Electronics training programme, and the Automation and Robotics training programme.

The main objective of the workshops was to raise awareness among students about the importance of digital privacy and the protection of personal data in the everyday use of mobile applications. Throughout the sessions, key concepts were addressed, such as what is meant by personal data and how it is collected and processed.

One of the central blocks of these sessions focused on managing mobile application permissions, explaining in practical terms what types of permissions Android apps request, what they are used for, and how to grant or deny them in an informed manner.

Also, students worked with APK Falcon, a tool developed by members of the IngPriv Group, which allows them to analyse Android mobile applications and assess their privacy risk. Through practical examples, participants were able to check what permissions an application requests, compare similar apps, and detect possible behaviours that may pose a risk from a data protection perspective.

The IngPriv Group would like to thank the teaching staff and vocational training students at IES Julián Marías for their collaboration and interest in this type of training initiative.
