Do you know what algorithms are and who designs them?

In Radio Televisión de Castilla y León – RTVCyL interviewed David Sanz and Mercedes Martínez who addressed these issues and also explained the regulation of the European Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that establishes controls to protect the rights of individuals and their privacy, as well as to promote transparency in its design and implementation.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, proposed at the Davos Economic Forum held in January 2025 to put an end to anonymity on social networks by creating a digital identity document. The aim is that users can be identified by the authorities.

Radio Televisión de Castilla y León – RTVCyL interviewed Mercedes Martínez to go deeper into this topic. Mercedes explained what the digital wallet is and how it works.

Are your data protected? Who does this data belong to?

In December, David Sanz Esteban and Mercedes Martínez were interviewed on Radio Televisión de Castilla y León – RTVCyL about these questions and explained what companies do with our data and what regulations exist to protect them.

This issue is part of the App-PI Project that the Privacy Engineering Research Group of the School of Computer Engineering is developing within a collaboration agreement between the University of Valladolid and INCIBE – National Institute of Cybersecurity.
In addition, we are developing the APK Falcon application to provide citizens with useful tools that allow them to assess the impact of mobile applications on the privacy and security of their data; and the App-PIMD repository where we store the data we collect to know that impact.

In the Vive! Radio Valladolid program, Mercedes Martinez , principal investigator of the Privacy Engineering Research Group was interviewed on the occasion of the celebration of the X LexDatum Conference and Mercedes explained what this year’s edition was going to consist of.

In addition, during the interview Mercedes talked about the challenges currently faced by technology developers to address the dangers that threaten the privacy of minors in the use of the Internet and mobile applications.
They also talked about Chat Control and the App-PI Project that the group is developing, which aims to provide citizens with useful tools that allow them to assess the impact of mobile applications on the privacy and security of their data and for this purpose, they have also developed the APK Falcon application.

The intrusion in the privacy of messages is an issue that was raised in July 2024 in the new legislature of the European Parliament and that was being dealt with collaterally when studying monitoring mechanisms in messaging applications to avoid child abuse.

Mercedes Martínez, member of the Privacy Engineering Research Group, was interviewed for the Radio Televisión Castilla y León – RTVCyL News program on this topic.

In the program Mediodía en COPE Valladolid they interviewed Mercedes Martínez González to learn about the App-PI Project initiative that aims to provide tools to users and app developers to protect privacy. In addition, Mercedes provided tips on how we can give or remove permissions to mobile applications.

In the interview for the Innovators section of El Mundo-Diario de Castilla y León, Mercedes Martínez González together with Margarita Gonzalo Tasis and Alejandro Pérez de la Fuente explained the App-PI Project that the Research Group is developing to help users to install secure apps on their phones and guarantee their privacy. In addition, this work aims to be a support tool for developers.

Interview in Innovadores of El Mundo-Diario de Castilla y León

Members of the Privacy Engineering Research Group participated in June in the Press Club organized by El Mundo-Diario de Castilla y León together with INCIBE.

In the event entitled ‘Cybersecurity as an opportunity in the universities of Castilla y León’ were invited representatives of the public universities of León, Salamanca, Burgos and Valladolid who urged to take advantage of the potential of cybersecurity to continue as a national benchmark.

Mercedes Martínez González stressed that it is important to create synergies so that research flows.

The Privacy Engineering Research Group is developing a free tool for users to take control over their personal data.

El Norte de Castilla interviewed members of the group to learn about the APK Falcon tool that allows users to know how privacy increases or decreases when adding or removing permissions to mobile applications.

In March 2024 the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) prohibited the company Worldcoin, after receiving several recommendations, to continue collecting biometric data from users for at least three months.

The Diario de Palencia interviewed Amador Aparicio, member of the Privacy Engineering Research Group of the School of Computer Engineering of the University of Valladolid on this issue, as the group itself investigates the use and impact on user privacy based on the permissions requested by mobile apps.
