At the X LexDatum Conference, Ivan Stanković, Senior Software Engineer at Wire, gave a presentation in which he reflected on how to guarantee digital security without jeopardising fundamental privacy rights.
One of the main challenges he raised was that of protecting vulnerable groups, such as minors, while proposals such as Chat Control are being discussed. This requires finding the right balance between ethics, technology and security.
During his speech, Stanković explained several key points:
✅Strong encryption works, as Snowden’s leaks demonstrated, but it remains under pressure from governments seeking alternatives to access information, even resorting to spyware.
✅Cases such as Pegasus highlight the risks of these practices: spying tools that not only affect criminals, but have also been used against journalists, activists and political dissidents, even in established democracies.
In conclusion, Ivan emphasised the importance of promoting robust digital security through transparent, open platforms that respect user privacy. This is not only a technological issue, but also an ethical commitment that requires collaboration between developers, regulators and society as a whole.
