Digital privacy workshops at IES Julián Marías

On 12, 13 and 14 November 2025, members of the Privacy Engineering Research Group (IngPriv) at the School of Computer Engineering of the University of Valladolid gave several workshops on digital privacy to a total of 82 third-year secondary school students at the IES Julián Marías secondary school in Valladolid.

The main objective of this training activity was to raise awareness among students about the importance of protecting their personal information and understanding how their data is managed when they use mobile applications in their daily lives.

Throughout the sessions, students worked in a practical and participatory manner on concepts such as digital privacy, personal data, how this information is collected, and why it is essential to protect it. The workshop included an introduction to what metadata is, what information it can reveal (location, date, device, etc.), and how to review it to avoid sharing more data than necessary.

They also learned how to check what permissions the apps they install request, understand what they are used for, and make informed decisions about when to grant or deny them.

Finally, the students used APK Falcon, a tool developed by members of the IngPriv Group, which allows them to analyse Android applications to identify permissions requested by apps, compare similar applications, detect relevant differences, and identify privacy risks.

The initiative received a very positive response from both teachers and students, who highlighted the practical approach and usefulness of the concepts covered in the workshop. The IngPriv Group would like to thank IES Julián Marías for its interest and collaboration in these training activities aimed at protecting digital privacy.
