Digital privacy workshops at IES Río Duero

On 9 and 10 October 2025, members of the Privacy Engineering Research Group (IngPriv) at the School of Computer Engineering of the University of Valladolid gave several workshops on digital privacy to third-year secondary school students at IES Río Duero in Tudela de Duero (Valladolid).

The objective of this training activity is to raise awareness among students about the importance of protecting their privacy and personal data when using mobile applications.

The sessions were led by collaborators Marta Urueña Valle and Alberto Ceinos Rodríguez, together with Laura Heredero Sánchez, Génesis Michel De León Alcántara and Mónica Melero Lázaro, members of the IngPriv Group, who explained to participants how to identify what permissions the applications they install on their Android devices request and how these can affect their privacy. They also learned how to grant or deny permissions in an informed manner, which facilitates secure decision-making in the online environment.

The workshop included a practical activity with APK Falcon, a tool developed by members of the IngPriv Group. Thanks to this tool, students were able to analyse real mobile applications and detect risks associated with their data. This experience helped students become aware of the data collection and digital tracking that many applications perform.

The workshop combined accessible theoretical content, examples related to everyday mobile phone use, and interactive activities that encouraged participation. In addition, advice was offered on digital privacy, best practices for personal data protection, and recommendations for recognising potential threats to information security.

This initiative was very well received by both the students and teachers at IES Río Duero, whom we thank for their collaboration.
